Earlier this year, it was revealed Paramount planned to do something similar with the Transformers franchise. Besides producing sequels to the original four films, Paramount will reportedly plan several spinoffs and possible prequel films, expanding the world of the Transformers, already established by director Michael Bay, into a vast filmic universe not unlike the MCU.
The latest news regarding Transformers revealed an animated prequel is in the works; one that will likely explore the origins of the Transformers and their home world of Cybertron. Now, a report from TFW (via Heroic Hollywood) says that Stephen Davis, executive vice president of Hasbro, was on-hand at the MIP Junior Conference, where he revealed that Hasbro and Paramount have the Transformers series planned through 2025:
"You’re going to see a new Transformers movie coming from Hasbro, Paramount, Michael Bay, and our other partners. In fact, we just finished, which some of you may have read, just an incredible experience. We decided that we want to plot out the next 10 years of the Transformers franchise."As the interconnectedness of movie universes becomes an increasingly important aspect on which franchises are sold, the news from Hasbro and Paramount shouldn’t shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Such a plan carries a significant risk (see: Fox’s Fantastic Four), but in terms of generating fan interest and creating a consistent story between the individual films, such a sizable plan makes sense. Of course planning this far in advance is predicated on the idea that future installments of the Transformers series will be as successful as the ones that have come before. There is a possibility of failure, but it’s worth noting that the size and scope of the plan probably has something to do with the $3.7 billion dollars the franchise has already amassed at the box office.
"So, we got together in a room over a three-month period of time with nine of some of the most creative writers I have ever worked with shepherded by Akiva Goldsman, who many of you may know won an Academy Award for A Beautiful Mind and has written a bunch of really great movies. And they plotted out the next ten years of Transformers… So stay tuned: Transformers 5 is on its way.. and 6 and 7 and 8."Akiva Goldsman — who is mentioned here as being the head of the Transformers writing room — may not have the most consistent track record in the world, but he has found enough success (and that Oscar doesn’t hurt, either) that his role leading such a significant undertaking makes sense. Thankfully, Goldsman is not alone, as former Daredevil and Spartacus showrunner Steven S. DeKnight and Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, have also been brought on board to help shape the future of Transformers.
While there’s no guarantee the group will find success with this particular franchise, the array of talent may be exactly what Transformers needs to stay fresh, especially if it’s going to be a feature in cinemas for another 10 years.
Transformers 5 is tentatively expected to reach theaters in 2017. Screen Rant will keep you updated as information is made available.
